Awards

The schools have been recognised nationally by a number of organisations as providing outstanding education.

The children contribute in a major way to achieving these awards – all that the staff do would be purposeless without them to inspire us!

Here are some of the areas in which the schools excel.

3rd Millennium Learning Award

A few months ago, we (Holy Island and Lowick) were nominated for a national award recognising the quality of the learning that goes on in the schools. The ‘Third Millennium Learning Award’ is being run by NAACE – a professional body which oversees the delivery of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in schools across the country.

Dorothy Davies, one of our governors, raised the profile of Holy Island and Lowick at a national level a few years ago when we became the first schools in Northumberland to receive the prestigious ICT Mark. For this new award Dorothy has worked closely with myself, Mrs. Vanson, the staff and the children to bring together a video about the work of the schools.

There are only 16 other schools in the country who have won this award – a sign of just how special Holy Island and Lowick schools are. Dorothy and I were invited to Leicester for the presentation ceremony, where Vanessa Pittard from the Department for Education praised the schools for our innovative practice and the great work of the children.

It’s really something for such tiny schools, up here in the middle of no-where (!) even to have been ‘heard of’ by national organisations like the DfE and NAACE – never mind to win such an award.
